Bringing Jainism to Life Through Art: An Exhibition by Shilpa Surana

The essence of Jain philosophy finds new expression through the sculptural artistry of Shilpa Surana, whose upcoming exhibition at Mumbai’s Haat of Art fair promises a unique blend of spirituality and craftsmanship. Held at the Nesco Exhibition Ground from October 25 to 27, 2024, this event will showcase sculptures that embody the teachings of Jainism, intricately crafted in fiberglass and bronze.

A seasoned sculptor with a master’s degree from Andhra Pradesh University, Shilpa honed her skills under Professor Ravi Shankar Patnaik and has dedicated the past seven years to exploring the spiritual depths of sculpture. Beginning with 3-foot head sculptures, her journey has grown to encompass monumental 9.5-foot creations. Each piece reflects her belief in the spiritual essence of art, which she practices at Studio Sukriti in Jaipur.

Guided by the mentorship of V. Ramesh, who taught her the power of reflective creation, Shilpa channels her thoughts and dreams into tangible, thought-provoking forms. She draws inspiration from the Kalpasutra, a revered Jain scripture that extols non-violence, truth, and asceticism. This ancient text, rich in mythological narratives, details the lives of the Tirthankaras—spiritual teachers in Jainism—and serves as a foundation for her work, emphasizing ethical and spiritual living.

“I use different mediums to bring out the mythological characters. I have worked on fiberglass, bronze, and terracotta,” shares Shilpa. Through her sculptures, viewers are invited into a meditative space where art and spirituality converge, celebrating timeless values that resonate with modern life.
