NIFA Art Academy, in collaboration with the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Mumbai, successfully presented “Stone Music,” an experimental performance by acclaimed Japanese artist Tokio Hasegawa, on June 21, 2026, as part of his India Tour 2026.

The event brought together artists, students, cultural enthusiasts, and members of the public for an evening that celebrated artistic innovation, cultural exchange, and humanity’s connection with nature. Hasegawa, founder of the Mithila Museum in Niigata, Japan, and former member of the renowned avant-garde collective Taj Mahal Travellers, is internationally recognized for his efforts to promote Indian folk art and experimental performance practices.

The program was presented in two parts. The first featured a lecture titled “The Future of Indian Folk Art,” where Hasegawa shared his perspectives on preserving and promoting traditional art forms in a rapidly changing world. The second part showcased Stone Music, a unique performance blending sound, movement, improvisation, and natural elements.

Rooted in Japanese culture yet inspired by artistic traditions from around the world, Stone Music explored themes of coexistence, environmental awareness, and creative freedom. Drawing inspiration from elemental forms such as stone, bamboo, shadow, and the human voice, the performance offered audiences an immersive and thought-provoking experience.

The event also featured select works from the Mithila Museum Collection, including Ganga Devi’s iconic “Tree of Surya Mukhi” (1990), creating a meaningful dialogue between traditional Indian folk art and contemporary international performance.

Supported by NIFA Art Academy, Folkroot Art Studio, and Mithila Museum, the India Tour 2026 continues to strengthen cultural ties between India and Japan while encouraging new conversations through art and creativity.
